The war between Mathias Mpuuga and National Unity Platform (NUP) boss Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine is not about to end.
theGrapevine has learnt that Mpuuga has now resorted to clandestinely fight MP’s who fully support Bobi Wine and supported him when he told Mpuuga to apologise or resign over the Shs.500 million service award from parliament.
One of the culprits is Rubaga South MP Aloysious Mukasa Talton Gold who Mpuuga’s team have started fighting and they have already picked a replacement who they have already started marketing.
It is alleged that recently, Mpuuga hired a reporter from one of the daily newspapers to start marketing Eugenia Nassolo, who Bobi Wine denied a party ticket in 2021 as Mukasa’s possible replacement for Mpuuga.
In a story that was published by this daily in one of their weekend edition, Mpuuga’s team accused Mukasa of not doing anything for the constituency throughout his tenure.
Mukasa’s team now says their MP and a host of others who supported Mpuuga’s impeachment especially in Buganda have been blacklisted.
They say that they were first chased from CBS radio because they were against Mpuuga who has friends within management.
In an effort to dispel their lies, Mukasa says that Mpuuga and his team are fighting a battle they will not win because the evidence of what he has done for the people of Rubaga South during his tenure is overwhelming.
“I’m really wondering when it became a crime to fight for what is right. We just supported our party president who gave us enough evidence implicating Mpuuga on the Shs.500 million service award. Now he is using Mengo and DP people to fight some of us, but he will not win,” Mukasa said.
He disclosed during his tenure, he has done what is enough to prove to his electorates that they elected the right person.
“Start by looking at the infrastructure in Rubaga South; Most of the roads were impassable when I was elected. The road network in Rubaga South is currently very good,” Mukasa said.
He disclosed, “The road from Freedom city to Nyanama and wankulukuku has been worked on; the road from Forum for Democratic Chance (FDC) headquarters that crosses to Kabowa, then Ssuuna Road through Wankulukuku to Kampala international University has been worked on; the road from Busega Market to the Sino truck showroom up to Kibumbiro has been worked on. All these roads have been worked on in my tenure. And remember It’s not only the roads that are being worked on, the drainage system is also being worked on. Go there and see for yourself.”
Mukasa added, “Remember, starting work on these roads was not easy because I one day had to raid the contractor’s office and threaten to rally my people to riot because they were delaying works on some of these roads.”
Mukasa related that as the MP of the area, he has vigorously fought land grabbing.
“We all know that land grabbing is one of the cancers that is eating up this country, and Rubaga South is not spared. Remember, the people grabbing land are big people who have money and can arm twist the system, but I have fought very hard to curb the vice in my constituency by fighting these land grabbers hands on.”
“I have fought land grabbers in areas of; Najjanankumbi II, Najjanankumbi I Church zone, Mutundwe Mbaawo Zone, Busega among others, and people who have been saved from these land grabbers can testify. Of course during this battle I realised that part of the problem was that most of the culprits were ignorant concerning land matters and laws. So the land grabbers were playing on the ignorance of the people,” he related.
“Definitely that called for land sensitization meetings which we held to equip my people with enough knowledge on land matters.”
“Concerning the health of our people, Rubaga South under my tenure as MP has excelled. We have one big health centre in the area which is Kitebi Health Centre IV. But the doctors there know that I’ve always conducted routine checkups there to make sure that the Health centre is in fully stocked with the basic items like drugs to cater for the needs of our people,” ne narrated.
He added, “Surprisingly, most of the people who use this health centre are not from my constituency. They are from Kyengera, Nsangi and other areas which are out of Rubaga south, but regardless, I have to make sure it is in a proper state to handle every Ugandan who has a health issue.”
“The health centre of course needs to be upgraded to the level of Kirundu and also expanded. I already told government that but you know these things take time since a lot of resources and people are involved.”
Mukasa revealed that he has been giving free water to his voters.
“Everyone knows it is not the job of an MP to give people free water. But I had to procure water distribution trucks to give people free water in the constituency because let us face it, water is very expensive yet it is a need for all households.
Every week I filled the tanks on these trucks with water and disbursed them out into the constituency to give free water to the people in the various zones that make up Rubaga South especially those which faced water crisis. Definitely it became very expensive for me and I cut down on the number of times and trucks.”
From there I went to addressing the sanitary needs in the area given that in my constituency, there are many people who dwell in slums.
“Now in my tenure, we advocated for free public toilets because let us face it, most people cannot afford the expensive toilets in the city. I told Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda about this issue and she told me, inside the corridors of Parliament that they are ready to build these latrines but they are not ready to buy land, so let the people give them free land and they construct these affordable public toilets. This probably was an indirect response that they are not ready to build them.”
Mukasa added that in line with helping improve the livelihoods of his electors, he has been giving money to local SACCOs with an aim of boosting their earnings.
“I even placed adverts on radios like CBS marketing businesses in Rubaga South like; Timber, spare parts for vehicles, motorcycles, boat engines with the aim of pulling people from other areas to come and buy from businessmen and women in my area, because I knew doing this will help my people get customers which in turn will increase their revenue and livelihood.”
“Just like you see Rwanda investing in Arsenal to pull potential tourists from other countries to Rwanda thus creating revenue and employment for the Rwandese.”
“When they wanted to chase people who were working and living close to the railway lines, I met Gen Katumba Wamala the Minister for Works and Transport and pleaded with him that these people have spent over 3 years working from these places, so it was not right to demolish their businesses and properties. I told Gen Katumba that these people were destitute who were trying to earn a living through the little they were getting from their business. I asked him to give them more time, and also instead of completely chasing them away, at least let them extend some meters away from the railway lines.”
“I also informed him that since most of these people are destitute like I said, if they are chased away from places near the railway lines, which many were now using to fend for their families, these people out of dispair will turn into criminals. This of course will increase the crime rate not only in Rubaga South but also in the city. I asked him that we can find alternatives where it a win-win for both government and the locals,” he said
“The good thing is that during this fight, I was joined by the current leader of opposition in Parliament Joel Sennyonyi and Ronald Balimwezo, because they also had people in their constituencies who were going to be heavily affected by the directive. Because of our outcry, the directive was halted. When I tell you that we are working for our people, this is what I mean and that is why Rubaga South voters put me at the helm as their MP.
“Lastly when I was elected MP, you remember that our timber traders in Ndeeba were always attacked by fires which kept destroying their business. I requested the speaker to inform the Minister for Internal Affairs that these fires were becoming a security threat since these traders had vowed to riot.
Remember Ndeeba is the main depot for timbers for Kampala and most of the suburbs. Secondly, these traders buy from the many farmers who have planted pine trees and eucalyptus trees from where they get the timber. So these fires were quickly turning into a threat to their businesses.
I looked at the fires themselves, and told them that we need water hydrants in the area and around the City. Remember my constituency is close to the city. I fought hard to make sure that we have water hydrants in and around the city to make it easy for police fire brigade to contain these fires quickly before they destroy our traders’ businesses.”
Mukasa told Mpuuga and his people that, “I was not elected to put myself in the newspaper; I was elected to work for the people of Rubaga South and that is what I’m doing. And the evidence is overwhelming on the ground. Let those journalists go there because the evidence is prodigious. Surprisingly they did not even contact me for my side which is absurd.”
